Tuesday afternoon, King Abdullah Academy hosted Dr. Nisa Muhammad, Assistant Dean of Religious Life from Howard University as a guest speaker in honor of the Black History Month.
Dr. Muhammad explained that Muslims have influenced the history of the U.S. for over 300 years. The Smithsonian National Museum of History and Culture reports that, African Muslims have been a part of American society as early as the 1500s when they took part in colonial expeditions in North America and that African Muslims fought in the American Revolutionary War.
In her address, Dr. Muhammad explained that as many as 30% of people from West and Central African Countries, who were enslaved and transported to the U.S., were Muslim. Among the difficulties they faced, were challenges to practicing their faith.
